SAVANNAH, Ga. (TNND) — Fort Stewart is on lockdown and casualties have been reported after an active shooter incident in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area.

The area was put on lockdown at 11:04 a.m. EST and law enforcement is on the scene.

According to a social media post from Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield, casualties have been reported, but the number of potential victims was not provided. According to a report from WTOC, four people were taken to the hospital.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko told The Associated Press it was not immediately known if anyone had been injured.

“We are currently assessing the situation but we can confirm an active shooter,” Tomko said.

An earlier social media post from Fort Stewart read, "The Commander has issued a Lock Down in the 2ABCT area in place order for Fort Stewart including Wright and Evans Army Airfield. Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership."

Some schools in the area of Fort Stewart were also placed on lockdown.

FBI Atlanta says its Savannah office is aware of the incident and is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement on the incident via X.

As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same."

Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., called for prayers for the casualties, their families and law enforcement on scene.

Fort Stewart is located southwest of Savannah and is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
