TIFT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A grandmother is reportedly recovering in the hospital following a shooting the morning of Tuesday, May 6 in Tift County.

According to the Tift County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), deputies were alerted to a possible gunshot victim at around 9:54 a.m. on May 6. The incident occurred in the 3000 block of Hillcrest Circle in Tifton.

When authorities arrived, they said they found a woman suffering from injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital.

Neighbors said the gunshots sounded like loud banging sounds, and at the time, the reality of what was happening didn’t register completely.

“I didn’t realize it was anything was going on out here. I would have been ducking and dodging in my house,” one neighbor said.

Authorities said the 59-year-old victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. While neighbors are glad the victim is expected to recover, the incident still left them uneasy.

“It was just shocking to know that all of that was happening right here in this neighborhood,” another neighbor said. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood. I think that anytime you hear gunshots in your neighborhood, it makes you nervous because it lets you know just how unsafe you are, even in your home.”

As of now, the Tift County Sheriff’s Office has not released the victim’s name or identified any suspect(s). Investigators said details remain limited as the investigation is ongoing.
