COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) -A Coffee County grand jury has returned a three-count true bill murder indictment against Jon Worrell in the September 2006 death of his wife Doris.

The indictment, filed in the Superior Court of Coffee County on June 10, 2025, accuses Worrell of malice murder, felony murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The indictment alleges that in conspiring to murder Doris, Jon “did unlawfully conspire to commit the offense of murder, and in furtherance of said conspiracy, the overt act of recruiting certain individuals to kill Doris Worrell . . .” However, the indictment does not name the individuals prosecutors believe Jon Worrell recruited to help murder his wife.

In the early stages of the investigation, authorities arrested two men on conspiracy to commit murder, but the case against them was dropped due to lack of evidence. Since that time, one of the two men has died.

In a May 23, 2025, news conference on Worrell’s arrest, law enforcement officials stated they believed evidence they gathered revealed that Worrell recruited someone to kill his wife.

Worrell’s arrest on May 20, 2025, in Maryville, Missouri, where he resided, followed more than 18 years of investigation.

On September 20, 2006, someone shot and killed Doris Worrell at Jon’s Sports Park, a Douglas business run by the Worrell family.

Investigators say they believe Worrell’s motive for murdering his wife stemmed from marital problems, including an inappropriate relationship with the couple’s then live-in nanny, Paola Yarberry.

A bond hearing for Worrell is set for June 26.
