AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB)- The Georgia Power Foundation honored the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter with a recent donation to Phoebe Sumter Hospice and Phoebe Hospice.

The foundation’s donation totaling $100,000 was split evenly between the two hospice organizations.

The gift by the foundation recognizes the former president’s commitment to building energy infrastructures in Georgia and across the nation, including his push for clean energy. It also acknowledges the Carters’ advocacy for compassionate care.

While governor of Georgia, Mr. Carter played a vital role in passing the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act of 1973.

Further, during his presidency, the Carter Administration created the Department of Energy in 1977. The former president also had solar panels placed on the White House.

Even after his time as president, Mr. Carter offered unwavering support for the development of clean energy.

In 2017, Mr. Carter partnered with Georgia Power and SolAmerica to install a 10-acre solar farm on his property in Plains, used to help provide energy to his hometown.

The foundation said the donation also highlights the important role hospice plays in providing care for Georgians. Both President and Mrs. Carter received care through Phoebe Sumter Hospice.

Both hospice organizations serve many communities in Southwest Georgia.

Phoebe Hospice provides care in 11 counties in and around Albany, while Phoebe Sumter Hospice serves Sumter and seven surrounding counties.
