ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia NAACP leaders are disappointed after learning of an email sent to Georgia Tech faculty informing them of changes to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) online content.
Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs said the organization received the email from a concerned citizen. The email was sent to faculty from a Georgia Tech communications department employee.
According to the email, any online content with DEI words, such as diversity, inclusive excellence and justice, will be deleted from any Georgia Tech affiliated websites.
Griggs said he wants to meet with university leaders to discuss these changes.
“To get a full understanding of why they feel the need to erase diversity, equity and inclusion and any mentions of justice,” he said.
According to the email, the changes mean much online content written over the years will no longer be there or will have to be rewritten.
Griggs said all Georgia universities should remember they serve a diverse state.
“It’s very disappointing, especially considering Georgia Tech is one of the best schools in the state of Georgia. To see them take this position seems antithetical to their mission,” Griggs said. “And so my hope is this can be a learning experience not only for Georgia Tech, but for all the institutions in the state of Georgia.”
A Georgia Tech representative told Atlanta News First that the university first decided to begin discontinuing DEI programs in 2023, which included eliminating positions and realigning funding. Updating their website is part of that.
Georgia Tech is also ensuring compliance with all federal and state rules as well as policies set by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
The University System of Georgia provided the following statement when asked about the email:
“The University System of Georgia (USG) and our 26 public colleges and universities treat everyone equally. We do not discriminate for or against anyone. Over the past two years, the system’s governing Board of Regents has strengthened policies designed to uphold those values. In keeping with the expectations of the new federal administration, USG complies with all state and federal regulations to ensure decisions are based on merit and equal opportunity for all.”
