Description
MITCHELL COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Attorney General Chris Carr announced today that 21 individuals in Mitchell County have been indicted for allegedly fraudulently obtaining loans through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
According to the indictments, each defendant submitted a loan application claiming to own a business that, in reality, did not exist. The financial information provided in the applications was also fabricated. As a result of their actions, each defendant received at least one loan of $20,833, with some individuals submitting multiple applications and receiving a second loan. The total amount allegedly fraudulently obtained by all 21 individuals is $604,157.
“In the face of an unprecedented global health pandemic, the Paycheck Protection Program was designed to help small business owners keep their doors open and employees paid,” said Carr. “Those who exploited the system to illegally obtain funds will be held accountable. We are committed to protecting taxpayer dollars, no matter the amount, and we will continue to support legitimate local businesses that are following the rules.”
The PPP, established by the CARES Act and administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA), was intended to help small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants were required to certify, under penalty of law, that the funds were needed due to economic uncertainty and would be used exclusively for business-related expenses. If certain conditions were met, applicants could later apply for loan forgiveness if employee numbers and wage levels remained stable.
