PERRY, Ga. (WGXA) — Lawmakers in Georgia took a break from legislative duties to participate in a friendly cow-showing competition at the state fair, highlighting the state's agricultural heritage.
Senator Russ Goodman, chairman of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee, described the event as "good fun, friendly competition" that showcases the work done at the fair and the talents of young people.
Lawmakers had six minutes with 4-H and FFA students to learn about cattle and proper showing techniques.
Senator Blake Tillery expressed admiration for the students' skills, saying, "We got to interact with children who obviously been doing a great job with their own steers here." He noted that future showings would include goats and hogs, emphasizing the importance of the 4-H community in youth development.
Representative Teddy Reese claimed first place among the 10 legislators, despite it being his first time showing beef cattle.
Reese attributed his success to a unique strategy: "I just wanted to show my swag when I walked out. I gave the judge a little tilt. I did something somebody else wasn't going to do."
Despite Reese's individual win, the Senate team took home the trophy for the third consecutive year.
