MACON, Ga. (WALB) - The United States Attorney’s Office of the Middle District of Georgia has announced that C. Shanelle Booker is now the Acting U.S. Attorney.

Booker officially took the position on Jan. 12.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Booker is the first black person and first black woman to hold the top law enforcement job. Booker has served the residents of the Middle District of Georgia as a federal prosecutor since 2015.

“It is an honor for me to serve the citizens of the Middle District of Georgia in this leadership role, and to ensure the good work of the office continues seamlessly. Upholding justice and ensuring the safety of all is our office’s utmost objective, alongside our strong law enforcement and community partners across the Middle District of Georgia.”

As Acting U.S. Attorney, Booker will cover 70 of Georgia’s 159 counties, including Albany, Athens, Columbus, Macon and Valdosta. The Office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, including terrorism, child exploitations, illegal gangs, narcotics and more.
