ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is erring on the side of caution as winter weather threatens the state.
“Areas south of the I-85 corridor are most certainly expected to get winter weather impacts on the roadway,” said GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.
Since Sunday, GDOT crews have been treating roads with brine, hitting 6,000 lane miles all over Georgia. Metro Atlanta may not see too many impacts on the road. However, Dale said it won’t hurt to treat anyway.
“What we have to do at GDOT is make sure that we are working and treating what the worst-case scenario of that system would be,” said Dale.
The big story in metro Atlanta is the dangerous cold. Temperatures could dip into the teens overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday.
Many schools have already canceled classes or moved to virtual learning for Tuesday.

Moiz Malik said his kids will have virtual learning. He is glad his family stocked up on essential items just in case.
“It’s just better for the kids. They have snow days in the calendar year,” he said.
GDOT believes at the end of the day, it’s better to be over prepared for mother nature, than under.
“DOT has done a great job currently,” said Malik.
“We’ve certainly learned as Georgians in the winter that it is better to be safe than sorry,” said Dale.
