WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Senate Finance Committee is set to vote this week on whether to advance Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination to the Senate floor, amid growing concerns about his potential confirmation as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
"We have massive health problems in our country that we must face, honestly," Kennedy said during his congressional testimony last week.
His nomination has sparked apprehension among some Republicans due to his long-standing campaign against vaccines, particularly for children. Medical experts have warned that his confirmation could lead to dire consequences, including a resurgence of measles outbreaks.
"We had 1,400 cases of measles and nine deaths in our city. One city. I mean, Philadelphia became a feared destination," Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said. "Schools canceled trips to the city, and I just fear we're heading in that direction."
Despite the controversy, conservative groups like Moms for America have rallied in support of Kennedy. "The government not dictating how many shots our kids are going to have, or what they need to do in regards to their medical treatment," Kimberly Fletcher from the group said.
Another nominee under scrutiny is Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii.
Gabbard faced criticism during her hearing for her perceived support of Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, her meeting with former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and her refusal to label former NSA contractor Edward Snowden a traitor.
"Was he a traitor at the time when he took America's secrets, released them in public, and then ran to China and became a Russian citizen," Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma, questioned.
Gabbard responded, "Senator, I'm focused on the future and how we can prevent something like this from happening again."
Some Republicans are reportedly struggling with her nomination, as former President Donald Trump's team plans to target lawmakers who oppose his nominees.
"I'm not worried about any of the fantastic nominees that President Trump has put forward, because these are the ultimate disruptors," Jason Miller, the Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump, said. "These are the folks who are going to depoliticize government."
Kash Patel, nominated to lead the FBI, is another figure to watch. Patel has expressed a desire to dismantle the agency, yet his nomination process appears to be proceeding more smoothly.
