ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A law enforcement procession took place to honor the life and legacy of Sgt. Chris Fisher, a Warm Springs police officer who was killed in the line of duty last week.

The procession was part of funeral arrangements that were attended by large crowds, including law enforcement officers, first responders and people across the state who gathered to pay respects to Fisher.

The funeral was held at Flat Creek Baptist Church, 161 Flat Creek Trail in Fayetteville.

Visitation was from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a funeral service.

Public invited to line procession route

After the funeral, a law enforcement procession took place.

The public was invited to line the procession route to honor the fallen hero. The procession schedule was as follows:

• Departure: Flat Creek Baptist Church, Fayette County
• Route: Along Highway 54, turning left onto Jeff Davis Road
• Destination: Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville

Flags were at half-staff at the state Capitol and in Meriwether, Fayette and Heard counties.

Fisher’s family requested the U.S. Honor Flag, which flew at Ground Zero during 9/11 recovery efforts and has since been part of ceremonies honoring more than 1,000 police officers, firefighters, first responders and other public servants.

The Southern States Police Benevolent Association is raising money for the family.

Chris Fisher joined the Warm Springs Police Department in May 2026 and was promoted two months later, according to records, which also showed he had worked for the Meriwether County, Fayette County and Heard County sheriff’s offices.

Fisher was in his patrol car around midnight Sept. 1 when a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado stopped beside him and fired multiple shots into his car, killing him.

The driver of that truck, 23-year-old Jimmy Steverson, had been previously arrested by Fisher days before on felony gun and drug charges, according to court records. Steverson was released on bond.

Hours after the deadly shooting, Steverson was injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when he was arrested. He was later taken to a hospital and died from his injuries.
