DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — A local student’s recent scholarship pageant win is shining a spotlight on the educational opportunities available to South Georgia students through dual enrollment programs.

Kaitlyn Tanner, a 2024 graduate of Citizens Christian Academy and former dual enrollment student, was recently crowned Miss Georgia Southern University, according to a social media post from Douglas Now. Tanner will now move on to compete in the Miss Georgia pageant and use her platform to promote adoption advocacy and awareness.

While the crown marks a personal achievement, education leaders say stories like Tanner’s also highlight the growing role dual enrollment programs play in preparing students for college and leadership opportunities.

Dual enrollment allows qualified high school students to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. According to the Georgia Student Finance Commission, eligible students can receive funding that covers tuition, mandatory fees and textbooks for approved courses, helping reduce future college costs for families.

At South Georgia State College, dual enrollment students can begin taking college classes while still in high school, giving them an early start toward associate or bachelor’s degree pathways. The college says the program offers students meaningful academic experiences and helps them transition more confidently into higher education.

Educators say benefits can include earning college credits early, saving money on tuition, and building confidence before graduation particularly for students in rural communities where access to advanced coursework may be limited.

For Tanner, her recent title win represents more than pageant success, it reflects the broader opportunities students can access through early college experiences and community support.

As families begin planning for upcoming school years, education leaders encourage students to speak with counselors to explore whether dual enrollment could be a path that fits their goals.
