TIFTON, Ga. (WTVM) - Tift County Schools has announced Charles Burkett as the new head coach for the Tift County High School boys’ basketball team, effective May 1.

Burkett brings over 20 years of coaching experience and a career of championship-caliber teams. Most recently, he led Central High School to a 28-4 season and a Class 7A state semifinal appearance during the 2024-2025 season. His coaching career also includes a 2015 state championship title at Hoover High School and numerous Final Four and playoff appearances across multiple programs.

“Coach Burkett is a proven leader with a strong vision for building a winning culture both on and off the court, his experience and passion for developing student-athletes make him a perfect fit for Tift County.”

A former standout player at Jacksonville State University, Burkett helped lead the Gamecocks to a 72-13 record over three seasons, claiming two Gulf South Conference championships and two NCAA Elite Eight appearances. He scored over 1,300 career points and earned Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and NCAA All-American honors during his senior season. He was inducted into the Jacksonville State Hall of Fame in 2013.

Following his college career, Burkett played professionally for five years in Europe and the Caribbean, gaining international experience that continues to shape his coaching philosophy.

In 21 years as a coach, Burkett has amassed a 432-190 career record. His teams have 13 seasons with 20 or more wins, nine area titles, eight regional final appearances, and six Final Four matchups.

A public meet and greet with Coach Burkett will be scheduled after he begins his role in May.
