IRWIN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Just one day after a lightning strike sparked a fire that caused significant damage to an Irwin County church, members of Frank Primitive Baptist Church gathered to worship, determined not to let the setback shake their faith.
The fire broke out Saturday night after lightning struck the church during severe weather moving through the area. Church leaders said approximately 40% of the building was damaged, primarily affecting the social hall. The sanctuary and children’s areas were spared, and no injuries were reported.
While the damage left a visible mark on the church building, members say it did not diminish the congregation’s spirit.

On Sunday, worship services were moved outdoors as church members gathered together in prayer and fellowship. Surrounded by the damaged building, the congregation focused not on what was lost but on what remains.
“We’re thankful no one was hurt, and we’re thankful God protected the sanctuary,” Pastor O’Quinn said. “A building can be repaired, but our faith remains strong.”
The scene was a powerful reminder of the church’s resilience as members sang, prayed, and supported one another less than 24 hours after the fire.
For many families, the church has been a cornerstone of the community for generations, making the damage especially emotional. Even so, members say they are committed to moving forward together.
Church leaders are now working to assess the full extent of the damage and determine the next steps for repairs. In the meantime, they plan to continue holding services and ministry activities while recovery efforts begin.

The congregation is also expressing gratitude to firefighters and emergency crews who responded quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the church.
As cleanup efforts continue this week, church members say the experience has strengthened their resolve and reinforced the message they shared during Sunday’s outdoor service. While the building may be damaged, their faith remains unshaken.
“We don’t always understand Him, but we know that God’s in control, and we continue to look to Him and trust Him, and that He’ll provide, and He’s good to us,” O’Quinn said.
WALB will continue following this story and provide updates as church leaders announce repair plans and future service arrangements.
