Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Warming centers are opening across South Georgia as extreme cold weather moves into the region, with temperatures expected to drop into the twenties.
The cold conditions pose serious health risks, with one person already dying from hypothermia in Dougherty County. Dr. James Black, medical director of emergency services at Phoebe, said cold weather can worsen pre-existing medical conditions and symptoms can set in faster than many people realize.
“Even ordinary health conditions are worsened by cold weather. So high blood pressure, for instance, is worsened. A lot of respiratory illnesses are worsened not only because of the cold weather, but even when you come inside to the dry heat, it tends to irritate those respiratory passages. So again, it makes a lot of other symptoms, other diseases, and worse. But it doesn’t take nearly as long as you think,” Black said.
The city of Albany has opened a warming center at the Albany transportation center to help those in need stay warm. The center is providing blankets, water, and a comfortable place to sleep during the cold weather.
One person at the center said he was grateful the resource exists.
“Yes, I think so because it is effective to me. Feel great. You’re not cold. You’re not hungry. You feel great,” he said.
Community member Maurice Stephens went directly to the warming center to offer supplies like water, food and winter clothing. He said he felt the need to donate as he understands what it’s like to be in that situation.
“I’ve been sober for three years now, and I’ve been out here in the streets too. And today I came out to handle a little business, and I seen a couple of people I knew that was out there in the streets with me. So, I decided to just share my food with them and give them something. It makes me feel good because that’s what people supposed to do look out for each other,” Stephens said.
The Albany Fire Department is accepting donations of clothes, blankets and other items to help keep people warm at stations across the area.
