Description
TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) — For the first time since he was shot in the line of duty earlier this month, Tifton Police Officer Michael Gaskins is speaking publicly about his recovery and the moment he realized he was coming home.
Officer Gaskins was critically injured during an officer-involved shooting on Dec. 5. He was recently released and escorted back to Tifton in a powerful show of support, a motorcade led by local and regional law enforcement agencies lining the streets to welcome him home.

The return was emotional, not only for Officer Gaskins and his family, but for a community that has followed his recovery closely since the shooting.
A homecoming filled with support
Police cruisers, flashing lights and cheering supporters stretched for miles as Officer Gaskins’ motorcade made its way through Tifton. Agencies from across South Georgia joined Tifton Police in the escort, symbolizing a bond between first responders and the community they serve.
Family members stood alongside fellow officers, many visibly emotional as Gaskins stepped out to embrace loved ones and colleagues.
The officer-involved shooting shook the Tifton community, sparking concern, prayers and an outpouring of encouragement. Officer Gaskins’ release and return home now mark a turning point, from fear and uncertainty to gratitude and hope.
Later today, Dec. 18, Officer Gaskins and his wife are scheduled to speak with WALB’s Ashanti Drake about the physical and emotional challenges ahead, the impact of the shooting on their family and what the overwhelming support has meant to them.
