Description
PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — Tropical Storm Erin has been developing in the far eastern Atlantic over the past several days.
It is likely to become the first hurricane of the season as it continues to move west. While it's too soon to determine if Erin will impact the US, the chances of potential impact appear to be decreasing.
Erin has been moving quickly through some not very favorable conditions. This has kept the storm weak. As it continues to move west, it will slow down and will encounter more favorable conditions for development.
All models indicate it will become the first hurricane of the season, and the current National Hurricane Center forecast brings Erin to category 3 major hurricane status by early next week.
The big question with Erin is how close it will get to the US. There has been some uncertainty, but as of Wednesday morning it is now looking very likely Erin will stay safely offshore of the eastern US.
All models are in great agreement that Erin will stay north of the Caribbean islands, then afterwards passing off the east coast somewhere near Bermuda.
Since this is over a week away, US impacts can't 100% be ruled out, but they appear very unlikely at this point.
Regardless of how far offshore Erin passes, large swells are likely along the east coast, including in Maine next week. Keep this in mind if you have beach plans; rip currents will likely be dangerous.
