DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Dougherty County Police Department (DCPD) is warning of a jury duty scam.

According to DCPD, the scammer targets victims through phone calls. The scammer will claim to be “Lt. Davis from DCP,” and will call from (229) 494-3777. The scammer will then demand $1,500 from the victim to avoid being arrested for failing to report for jury duty.

DCPD said they will not call residents to demand money or threaten arrest related to jury service. Anyone who receives a call like this is urged to hang up immediately and report it to local law enforcement.

“We want our citizens to be alert and aware—scammers are getting more creative and aggressive,” said Dougherty County Police Chief Kenneth Johnson. “Law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone or request personal financial information in this manner. If it feels suspicious, it probably is.”

To protect yourself, DCPD is urging residents to:

• Never give out personal or financial information over the phone.
• Don’t respond to threats or high-pressure tactics.
• Call DCPD at (229) 430-6600 to verify any law enforcement contact.
