ATLANTA, Ga. - Withheld federal funding for after-school and summer enrichment programs is setting off alarms in Georgia.
According to the National Education Association, Georgia may lose around $100 million for these programs.
The money also helped train teachers and the cuts will heavily impact schools that don’t have extra funds to cover these types of programs.
The Georgia Association of Educators say it’s leaving parents and school districts scrambling.
“Here we are 30 days before the beginning of school in the vast majority of our districts and parents are scrambling because they don’t know if that after-school care is going to be therem” said Lisa Morgan, of the association.
Places like the Boys and Girls Clubs also face the loss of federal funding.
In a statement, the U.S. Department of Education says the agency remains committed to ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent in accordance with the president’s priorities.
In a statement released Monday, Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods said: “I deeply believe in fiscal responsibility, which means evaluating the use of funds and seeking out efficiencies, but also means being responsible – releasing funds already approved by Congress and signed by President Trump. In Georgia, we’re getting ready to start the school year, so I call on federal funds to be released so we can ensure the success of our students.”
