ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is stepping in to help stranded travelers after the sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines, offering discounted “rescue fares” for passengers scrambling to rebook flights.

Spirit announced it has begun an immediate, orderly wind-down of operations, canceling all flights and advising customers not to go to the airport. The airline cited a sharp rise in oil prices and mounting financial pressures, saying it was unable to secure additional funding despite efforts to restructure and stabilize the business.

Delta says it is working to help impacted travelers reach their destinations by offering reduced, nonrefundable rescue fares in affected markets over the next five days. The airline says those fares are available even on flights nearing capacity, giving customers more options despite limited availability.

According to Delta, the discounted fares apply across its domestic network — including routes where Spirit previously operated — as well as select routes between the U.S. and Latin America. The airline adds that its hub system, including major operations in Atlanta and Detroit, allows for multiple rebooking options.
