DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Local business owners in Decatur County came together this past weekend to help people in need as dangerously cold temperatures moved through the area.
SkateTowne in Bainbridge opened its doors as a warming shelter, providing power, shelter, and food to those without heat or electricity. The effort was made possible through the support of community volunteers and local organizations.
SkateTowne officials said volunteers worked together to serve hot food, coffee, and other donated items to families and individuals in need.
According to SkateTowne, the outreach continued Monday during a free skate day held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Organizers said the event allowed them to feed even more families while offering a safe and welcoming space for the community.
The Salvation Army also assisted by supplying blankets to individuals who came in seeking help.
Community leaders say efforts like these highlight the importance of coming together to support neighbors during extreme weather conditions.
