CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The death of Charleston baseball legend Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son Miller while on a family vacation in Costa Rica is being investigated as possible carbon monoxide poisoning, ESPN reported Monday evening, citing Randall Zuniga, the director of Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department.
Miller fell ill along with several other family members while on vacation and died peacefully in his sleep, the Gardners said in a statement shared by the New York Yankees on Sunday, March 23.
Zuniga also said at a news conference that tests were being conducted in the room the family was staying in, where "high emissions of carbon monoxide contamination were detected," ESPN reported. Zuniga said these were initial findings.
Authorities last week ruled out asphyxiation as the cause of death, stating that the respiratory tract was clear upon inspection.
A Judicial Investigation Department spokesperson told ESPN that investigators think the death was accidental rather than a result of foul play.
Officials revealed the 14-year-old was found dead in a hotel room in Manuel Antonio and the cause of death was still pending Tuesday.

The family released the following statement regarding the loss of their son:
We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st. Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day."
Miller's father, Brett Gardner, a Holly Hill native, walked on to the College of Charleston baseball team before being drafted by the New York Yankees in 2005. He spent his entire career with the Yankees organization and was a part of the team that won the World Series title in 2009.
