ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Besides packing the perfect outfit for your weekend trip, you may also need to bring some extra patience when traveling through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport this weekend.

Work is underway at the South Terminal, closing off all outer lanes on the upper level for the weekend. Airport officials tell Atlanta News First that this latest improvement project will last until Monday, Sept. 15, at 5 a.m.

“I landed right on time,” said Dana Mallory, arriving home in Atlanta on Friday night.

Awaiting her outside, besides her ride home, were traffic cones and detour signs.

“It’s good that they’re improving the conditions, but it can also be very congested,” said Mallory.

Atlanta’s airport is investing billions in improvement projects, including upgrades to the parking deck and concourses. Friday night ushered in the latest work, shutting down the outer lanes of the upper level at the South Terminal.

“That’s going to back up traffic all the way to Camp Creek,” said Rashidat Mohammed. “That’s horrible. I’m somebody who likes to cut it kind of close, as it relates to trying to catch my flight. That would be terrible for me.”

The inner lanes and lower level will still be accessible. For those who use ParkATL shuttles, follow the signs. Pick-up is at the lower level of the South Terminal outside Door LS2, and drop-off is at the North Terminal outside Door LN1.

Atlanta’s airport is far from the only orange sign in town.

MARTA’s Garnett Station rail service will be temporarily closed starting Saturday through Oct. 26 for upgrades.

The city of Atlanta is announcing a new multi-million dollar road resurfacing plan. Night-time paving on Perry Boulevard and West Marietta Street starts Sept. 15.

“Roads definitely need improvements. You never know what you’re going to come up on with the potholes,” said Mallory.

“I think it’s a good thing, because the city needs fixing,” said Mohammed.

A key adjustment has been made for Georgia Tech’s noon game against Clemson on Saturday. GDOT decided to pause work this weekend on the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector to help fans avoid construction traffic before and after the game.

All this work, at the airport and the highways, “making more traffic, if that makes sense, from at least my point of view,” said Mohammed.
