Description
COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Plans have been filed for the construction of 60 chicken houses on a property along Highway 441 South in Coffee County — a project now facing strong pushback from nearby residents.
Community members say the proposed site borders the Satilla River and may disturb nearby wetlands and threaten endangered wildlife. Concerns have also been raised over potential contamination of drinking water due to chicken waste runoff, as well as a possible decline in property values.
Laura Temple Curtis, a nearby resident, shared screenshots from Facebook posts and planning documents that were made public regarding the project.
WALB is actively working to confirm several key details, including:
- Whether an environmental impact assessment has been completed
- If any permits have already been approved or if the project can still be halted
- Whether there will be a public comment or input period
We have reached out to Coffee County Commissioners and Planning Department officials, including Rod Freeman for answers on public involvement and the project’s timeline.
