Description
LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Leesburg was granted $2,500,000 in OneGeorgia funds by Governor Brian Kemp.
A press release from the governor said the funding will be used to build the necessary infrastructure for 66 workforce housing units. The project will be built in the 32 crossing subdivision on 130 acers in lee county.
The press release said the funding would go towards water, sewer, drainage, and road infrastructure improvements for the housing project. The city and the developer, Lamon Company, will also contribute funds for the project.
Leesburg City Manager Bob Alexander says the project will consist of 46 single-family homes and 20 townhouses. Alexander says these homes will be sold at a median income market value, ranging from $225,000 to $290,000.
This is the first phase of a project that could bring up to 500 housing units to Leesburg in the next five to seven years.
“Every Georgian deserves to be able to live in the community where they work, and today’s announcement is just the latest reminder of our commitment to that idea.”
OneGeorgia funds must be used within a specific timeline given for each project. That timeline is normally 30 months, according to the governor’s office. The OneGeorgia program aims to be a catalyst for developing and funding workforce housing. In total, $6.5 million will be spent statewide in this latest round of grant awards.
