SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (WALB) - Chris Gotterup won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in a playoff Sunday afternoon at TPC Scottsdale.

Gotterup defeated Hideki Matsuyama in the playoff after Matsuyama entered the final hole with a one-shot lead but struggled on the closing hole. Both players finished regulation at 16-under par.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler had a difficult first round but recovered Sunday with a bogey-free 64 to tie for third place at 15-under par. He was joined in the tie for third by Nicolai Højgaard of Denmark, Michael Thorbjornsen, Akshay Bhatia and Si Woo Kim.

Jake Knapp finished eighth at 14-under par, while Matt Fitzpatrick of England was ninth at 13-under par.

The victory marks Gotterup’s fourth career win and his second already this season. He earned $1.72 million for the victory.
