MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) - Every parent knows just how hard it is to find engaging, stimulating activities for children that don’t involve a screen. Now, a new children’s museum in Moultrie provides kids with plenty of out-of-the-box sensory experiences.

The Kaleidoscope Children’s Museum held their grand opening Saturday, March 15, after being in the works for almost ten years. The museum is located inside the Moultrie Arts Center.

“We felt like it would be a great revenue stream for the arts center in order to sustain this beautiful building and these beautiful programs,” said Ashley Goss, a member and former president of the Moultrie Service League. “But we also wanted to enrich the lives of the children in our community.”

At the museum, kids will be exposed to many different types of art. There is a room devoted to music and dance, plenty of reading nooks and colorful activities that encourage children to use their imagination while experiencing new things.

Museum Director of Programs and Education Krysta Porteus said, “This will build fine motor skills. They can play. They can create. There’s so much beneficial information around free, unstructured play that we can really provide that type of space that isn’t available in Moultrie.”

The National Library of Medicine shows that screen time reduces the amount of quality interactions between children and their parents. Additionally, children that are constantly exposed to electronics have slower language development and emotional growth.

Jennie Lynn Lovett is a mom who took her son to the museum today, said, “We battle, I think, as parents with young children just keeping them off screens. So, we really love the hands-on interaction they get at the art center. It’s also been able to teach things they aren’t getting with a typical education.”
