Description
CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - The Cairo Police Department is warning of a scam targeting residents.
The police department said in a Facebook post that some residents have been contacted by someone pretending to be from the police department, demanding a payment of thousands of dollars over the phone. The caller falsely claims that the victim needs to pay a fine or they will be put in jail.
“Please be assured that no one from our office will ever ask you to send money over the phone, nor will they ask for any personal information pertaining to your financial accounts.
We encourage you to inform your friends and family about this scam and remind them never to send money to anyone they don’t know through a phone call.”
The police department said that when someone from the Police Department contacts you, the number that will appear on your caller ID will be City of Cairo - 229-377-1722, not Cairo Police Department.
