COVENTRY, Vt. (TNND) — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed in northern Vermont Monday, according to a statement from the FBI.
The shooting happened on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles from the U.S.-Canada border, The Associated Press reported.
FBI Albany said they are investigating "an alleged assault on a federal officer in connection with a fatal shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol Agent."
Further details revealed that along with one agent, one subject was killed and a second subject was injured and in custody. The identity of the agent was not immediately released.
The FBI added there is currently no threat to the public but the investigation is "active" and more details will be provided as they become available. U.S. Border Patrol and Vermont State Police are working to gather evidence from the scene.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Peter Welch and Rep. Becca Balint issued a statement offering condolences to the family and Border Patrol.
"Border Patrol agents do important work protecting our borders. They deserve our full support in terms of staffing, pay and working conditions," the statement read. "We look forward to working with the agency to make sure that they have all the resources they need to do the enormously important work that is their responsibility. Together, we must do everything possible to prevent future tragedies like what happened today."
