MAUI (TNND) — A body was found in the wheel well of a plane when arriving at Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii on Christmas Eve, according to United Airlines.

"Upon arrival at Kahului airport in Maui on Tuesday, a body was found in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on a United aircraft," a statement read.

United Airlines Flight 202 arrived at the airport from Chicago O'Hare.

United said the wheel well is only accessible from the outside of the aircraft and it is not clear how or when the person accessed it.

The airline added they are working with law enforcement to investigate what happened.

"The Maui Police Department is currently conducting an active investigation regarding a deceased individual discovered on an incoming flight from the mainland this afternoon," officials said in a statement obtained by ABC News.

According to United, the aircraft was a Boeing 787-10.
