NASHVILLE, Ga. (WALB) — Emergency crews responded to a fire at Berrien Primary School Friday (Aug. 14) after calls came in to dispatch around 4:30 p.m.

Officials believe preliminary details show the cause of the fire was due to a lightning strike.

The Nashville Fire Department responded to the scene. Officials say part of the roof of the school caught fire, resulting in crews cutting holes in the roof to get to the root of the fire.

The fire was out and the scene was clear by 8 p.m.

Fortunately the incident happened after school hours. Officials say no students or staff were injured.

“District leadership is on site and is working closely with local fire, emergency and public safety officials to assess the extent of the damage and determine the next steps.

The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We will communicate directly with parents and the community as soon as additional information is available, including any changes or plans that may affect school on Monday.

We are grateful to our local first responders for their quick response and assistance. We appreciate the patience and support of our families and community as we work through this situation."
