Description
CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) — The Atlanta Braves sent a charter bus to pick up and host members of the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, at Truist Park in Atlanta.
The Cairo club is the only Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in the world.
Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson Day each year to honor the baseball legend who broke the sport’s color barrier.
In 1947, Robinson became the first African American to play in a major league baseball game in the modern era. Robinson, born in Cairo, took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field.
The Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves in Robinson’s first MLB game. He won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award at the end of the season.
