ATKINSON COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — Firefighters in Atkinson and Berrien counties collaborated on a tractor-trailer and structure fire near the border of the two counties on Friday, Sept. 5.

The Atkinson County Fire Department (ACFD) was called out to the tractor-trailer fire on Highway 82 at Coochee Road at around 6:37 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the tractor-trailer was fully on fire. According to ACFD, the trailer was hauling wood chips, and the wood chips were on fire.

The fire was finally controlled at around 7:50 p.m.

Then, at around 7:16 p.m., a second call came in about a structure fire about 10 miles away on Mando Lane in Willachoochee

Berrien County firefighters were asked to assist in fighting the second fire. In total, one unit from Atkinson County, as well as a tanker and an engine from Berrien County, responded to the structure fire.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found the structure fully engulfed in fire.

It was able to be extinguished within 30 minutes, and crews returned to the tractor-trailer fire on Highway 82.

While fighting the first fire, a firefighter was hit and the arm and suffered a minor injury, according to AFD. No other injuries were reported.

“With both counties working together, they were able to quickly and safely get both fires under control.

We have a great relationship with our brothers and sisters from Atkinson, and they have helped us out several times. It was nice to be able to return the favor.”
