GEORGIA, Ga. (WALB) — The Georgia Department of Public Safety (GDPS) urges drivers to prioritize safety through the 4^th of July holiday travel period.

The travel period begins on July 2, 2026, ending on Sunday, July 5^th, 2026. AAA believes more than 61.4 million people will take a road trip in that period.

The best times to travel are:

Thursday, July 2, 2026- Before 12 P.M.

Friday, July 3, 2026- Before 11 A.M.

Saturday, July 4^th, 2026- After 3:00 P.M.

Sunday, July 5, 2026- Before 11:00 A.M.

The worst times to travel are:

Thursday, July 2, 2026- 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.

Friday, July 3, 2026- 12:00 P.M.– 7:00 P.M.

Saturday, July 4^th, 2026- 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

Sunday, July 5, 2026- 12:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.

2025 Travel Season

During the 2025 travel period, Georgia State Patrol Units and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers made nearly 500 DUI arrests and worked approximately 320 traffic crashes. Those crashes resulted in 10 deaths and 200 injuries.

“As families and friends gather to celebrate Independence Day, we ask everyone traveling on Georgia’s roads to make safety their top priority. Our GSP Troopers and CVE Officers will be working around the clock to enforce traffic laws, ensuring everyone reaches their destinations safely.”

Troopers will be vigilant for any roadway violations through this travel period with Operation Zero Tolerance. The campaign targets impaired drivers and aggressive drivers.

Troopers encourage Drivers to wear seatbelts, obey speed limits, avoid distracted driving, and avoid driving impaired.
