Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Officials from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) released a Facebook statement that an Albany man was arrested on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 29.

Rontavious Grant, 26, was reportedly arrested after deputies responded to a shots-fired call near a Walmart on Ledo Road in Lee County.

According to the release, law enforcement officers heard multiple gunshots coming from the area behind the Walmart at 2825 Ledo Road late Wednesday. When deputies arrived and canvassed the area, they said they spotted two vehicles and several individuals in a nearby field. One vehicle quickly fled the scene at high speed, triggering a pursuit.

Chase Crosses County Lines

Officials say the fleeing vehicle, a gray 2025 Kia K4, traveled from Lee County into Dougherty County before deputies lost sight of it. A registration check identified the driver as Rontavious Grant of Albany.

The LCSO SWAT Team, which was conducting training in the immediate area at the time, assisted patrol deputies in locating those responsible for the incident.

Witness accounts lead to arrest

Witnesses told investigators they saw an individual in dark clothing fire an AR-style pistol before law enforcement arrived. Based on their statements and evidence collected at the scene, Grant was reportedly located at his place of employment in Albany and detained. During the arrest, Grant resisted and attempted to pull away from deputies before being handcuffed, LCSO said.

According to the release, Grant’s vehicle was discovered at the Quinn Court Apartments in Albany and towed to the LCSO impound lot. On Jan. 29, investigators executed a search warrant on the vehicle, finding an unspent .223 caliber round that matched a shell casing recovered at the scene—a key piece of evidence linking the vehicle to the incident.

No one was injured during the shooting, according to law enforcement.

Grant now faces four charges:

  • Reckless Conduct
  • Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Obstruction or Hindering a Law Enforcement Officer
  • No Insurance

Grant was booked into the Lee County Jail, officials said. The investigation remains active.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Captain Russ Snow at 229-759-6012.
