ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Georgia Tech student was killed in a shooting that happened at an off-campus apartment on Sunday, which the Atlanta Police Department said Wednesday they believe was a “targeted act.”
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our students,” Georgia Tech Institute Communications said in a statement Wednesday. “This loss is felt across our community, and our hearts go out to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals who provided such dedicated care.”
The 22-year-old student killed has been identified as Akash Banerjee, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The shooting happened at the Connector Apartments on Spring St. NW. The Connector, which is near the Georgia Tech campus, describes itself on its website as off-campus housing for Tech students.
Police said an argument in the hallway of the apartment building led to the shooting and the person of interest was there waiting for the victim to get home.
The student died from their injuries on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Atlanta Police Department held a press conference to give an update on the case.
Atlanta police said while they are still in the process of figuring out how the student and person of interest are connected, but that they had some sort of relationship. Police say they do “know that the student had a criminal history.”
“We’re looking at all those angles,” Lt. Andrew Smith, APD homicide unit commander, said.
Smith did not say what the student’s criminal history was.
Police also showed surveillance video of the person of interest, who was shown carrying a firearm.
