ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - An Albany woman has been arrested for hitting and killing a dog walking on a leash with its owner, Monday evening.

According to Albany Police, an officer responded to the 900 block of Hobson St, in reference to an auto accident with injuries. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the victim, later identified as Toykia Vickie in the roadway. Vickie stated she was walking on the road in the same direction of traffic with her two dogs when one got loose and darted across the road. And she was holding the leash for her other dog when he was hit by a White Honda.

The victim told APD that she fell to the ground when the vehicle hit her dog because the leash was wrapped around her wrist. Then the driver of the car left the scene and went to the house by the stop sign on Hobson St.

The officer made contact with the vehicle and ran information on the vehicle and found that the vehicle had no valid insurance and a suspended registration. The car is registered to the suspect, Melody Grier.

According to APD, Grier`s license were showing suspended for repeat Georgia serious commercial with a violation date of 07/28/2024 and suspension date of 09/20/2024, failure to appear with a violation date of 07/26/2024 and suspension date of 11/15/2024 and a failure to appear with a violation of 07/25/2024 and a suspension date of 11/28/2024.

The release says, the officer made contact with the driver`s mother. The mother stated that her daughter was driving the White Honda when she hit a dog and then came straight home. The suspect told police that she was driving down the street when a dog darted out into the roadway causing her to hit the other dog. She also told police the reason she left the scene was because she was scared of dogs.

Grier was arrested and transported to the Dougherty County Jail.
