ADEL, Ga. (WALB) — A bizarre and dangerous incident unfolded early Saturday morning in Adel when officers responded to a disturbance call on the 600 block of South Forrest Avenue.

According to Adel Police, Jack Whatley, 52, was found inside a vehicle screaming, jerking his body, and revving the engine. When officers tried to speak with him, Whatley accelerated, narrowly missing an officer and striking a patrol vehicle before speeding away.

Police say Whatley lost control near 5th Street and Forrest Avenue, crashing through the Adel City Cemetery before coming to a stop. He was arrested at the scene without further incident.

Whatley now faces multiple charges including DUI, assault on a peace officer, fleeing police, and property damage. Police Chief Audie Rowe thanked local law enforcement agencies for their support and extended thoughts and prayers to affected families.

The investigation remains ongoing.
