ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A momentous day unfolded for several local families as promising 8th-grade students officially committed to the Dougherty County School System’s REACH Scholarship Program. The signing ceremony, held at the Northwest Branch Library Conference Center, was far more than just paperwork; it represented a secure path to a brighter future and significant financial relief for deserving young scholars pursuing higher education.
Among the four winners is Jalexia Figgins from Albany Middle School. Despite her young age, Jalexia boasts an impressive resume, highlighted by exceptional Lexile reading scores and active participation in Math Corps, Basketball, Cheer, and Dance. Her ambition shines through as she already has clear plans for her college career.
“I saw my doctor helping me, and it made me want to go to college to be a pediatrician to help other kids if they’re sick,” Figgins said.
With all her achievements, Jalexia’s greatest joy was sharing the news with her mother, her constant source of encouragement.
“When she started crying, it made me cry, but I was really excited,” she said.
Jalexia’s mother, Angela Jackson, echoed her daughter’s sentiments, her pride evident. The day’s event brought back cherished memories of the profound impact her daughter has had on her life.
“She has been an amazing child from birth. She has always been a miracle baby because I thought I would never have kids,” Jackson said. “It’s an honor and a blessing to watch all of her hard work and all the ways I’ve poured into her as a parent. I’ve tried to get her to understand the importance of education and learning.”
Leaders of the REACH Scholarship say it’s a highly competitive initiative designed to identify and support each 8th grader with $10,000 each for college expenses, a sum that can double for specific universities. Its value can extend far beyond financial aid.

“It will take a financial burden off me and my family with [Jalexia] receiving this scholarship,” Jackson, her mother, confirmed.
Dougherty County Superintendent Kenneth Dyer attended the signing day to personally encourage the scholars as they transition into high school, underscoring the program’s long-term commitment.
“To get to this point, being a REACH scholar, they have done the right things so far in their educational career,” Dyer stated. “Continue to do the right thing, work hard, and lean on the people who support you to guide you in the right direction. Then you’ll be successful.”
The REACH scholarship is awarded annually, with one middle school student selected from each participating school in the county. Families and students interested in this program are encouraged to contact their school’s administration to learn more about eligibility and the application process.
