SEATTLE — The University of Washington confirmed the total number of international students and recent graduates who have had their visas unexpectedly canceled by the federal government has risen to 23.

The university said in an update posted Thursday that 13 current students and 10 recent graduates in post-graduation training have had their F-1 visas revoked, launching them into a precarious and unclear legal standing.

The F-1 Visa (Academic Student) allows visa holders to enter the United States as a full-time student at an accredited college, university, seminary, conservatory, academic high school, elementary school, or other academic institution or in a language training program. The student must be enrolled in a program or course of study that culminates in a degree, diploma, or certificate.

F-1 students are authorized to work off-campus in the United States as long as they are attending college. After graduation, F-1 visas can remain valid for a certain amount of time if the student enrolls in a line of work related to their field of study.

The Trump administration launched a crackdown on student visas shortly after taking office, with hundreds of international students across the nation suddenly having their visas withdrawn.

The mass revocation has led to lawsuits from states, students, and the ACLU. The Associated Press reported that at least 790 students at more than 120 colleges and universities nationwide have had their visas revoked or legal statuses terminated.

UW representatives said the cancellations occurred without prior notice to the university or the affected individuals.

"We are deeply concerned about the well-being of these students and graduates and are working to support them," the university said in a statement. "International students and scholars are essential and valued members of our University and they contribute immensely to our community, state and nation."

The university discovered the visa cancellations during routine checks of international student records in the federal government's Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

The SEVIS records indicated that the visa revocations were due to an immigration status violation, though no further details were provided.

UW said it is now conducting daily checks of SEVIS records to identify any changes and contact affected students promptly.

The university added the privacy of the students and graduates involved is being respected, and their wishes regarding the sharing of their names and information is being followed - meaning the possible reasons for the visa terminations, if known, were not released to the news or the public.

UW did state there is no indication that these cancellations are related to activism or other protected free speech.

In response to the cancellations, the university's international student services office is reaching out to affected individuals to offer support, including access to legal services, mental health resources, and academic assistance. The university emphasized its commitment to supporting international students and scholars, stating, "Our priority remains supporting our international students and scholars and we will continue to proactively communicate directly with them about these issues."

Members of the UW community who become aware of similar visa actions affecting students or scholars are encouraged to contact their campus' international student services office immediately.

According to the UW, there were a total of 62,763 students enrolled at the university’s three campuses in the fall of 2024. Of those enrolled, 45,097 were undergraduate students and 17,666 were graduate/professional students. Click here to see more "fast facts" data on the UW website.
