COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — It has been a memorable year weather-wise in Ohio. From the record number of tornadoes, the solar eclipse, and the historic drought.

Now, 2024 is on track to be the warmest year on record both globally and in the state of Ohio.

In Columbus, every month experienced above-average temperatures. Some notable months include February which was 8 above average and June which experienced a week of 90+ days.

Climatologist Aaron Wilson says Columbus isn't the only town to experience the record warmth.

"ln almost every single county, if you look at the county level, it's also their record warmest as well," Wilson said. "That goes for daytime, you know, daytime high averages, overnight low averages, or just the annual average temperature."

Wilson says with 2024 is most likely becoming the warmest year on record. Eight out of the top 10 warmest years since 1895 have all happened since 1990”.

The record warmth fueled a lack of snow but also jump-started the drought in early summer.

For 2025, Wilson thinks the drought could become a lasting story if we don't receive enough moisture in the winter from snow.

"I think recovering from drought is an important thing to think about this upcoming year and just to be ready for that variability that Ohio experiences," Wilson said. "Data is showing those extremes are getting a little bit more extreme, both on the temperature side, but also in particular on the rainfall side where we swing back and forth between very dry to very wet conditions "

As we head into 2025, below-average temperatures are likely for the beginning of January. However, it is too soon to say if that pattern will continue through the rest of the winter.
