VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - A 15-year-old was arrested after shots were fired at a vehicle in a Valdosta apartment complex on Friday night.

According to a release from the Valdosta Police Department, at around 8:55 p.m., VPD officers and detectives responded to Prosper Azalea City Apartments after receiving several reports of gunshots and a large group of people gathered under a pavilion, where the gunshots appeared to have originated. Callers also reported seeing individuals running from the area after the shots were fired.

When officers arrived, they found an empty vehicle that had been shot several times. Officers later also found the victim who had been in the car at the time of the shooting.

VPD said that other officers surrounding the area stopped several people, including several juveniles, who were running throughout the area.

Detectives were able to get surveillance video of the incident, which showed a juvenile shooting at a vehicle as it drove through the parking lot. Then, multiple people ran from the area.

VPD said that the shooter was identified as a 15-year-old whom they had stopped. He has been charged with the following:

• Three counts of aggravated assault (felony)
• Criminal damage to property (felony)
• Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime (felony)
• Possession of a firearm by a minor (misdemeanor).

The teen was taken to a Regional Youth Detention Center following authorization from the Department of Juvenile Justice.

While officers were checking the area where the shooting happened, they saw damage to apartments and were able to recover two firearms and narcotics. These items were taken to the Valdosta Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory for processing. More charges are forthcoming, according to VPD.

“With there being so many people being present when the juvenile recklessly began shooting, we are extremely thankful that no one was injured during this incident. This was an outstanding job by our team in their response, which resulted in numerous people being stopped and ultimately the arrest of the offender,” said Chief Leslie Manahan.
