Description

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) -A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured in an accidental shooting Thursday afternoon at a Valdosta apartment complex, according to Valdosta Police.

Police said officers, firefighters, and South Georgia EMS responded around 12:45 p.m., May 15, to Park Chase Apartments at 1100 Old Statenville Road after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found citizens providing first aid to a 14-year-old male who had been shot in the face.

Officers took over first aid until firefighters and EMTs arrived. While being treated at the scene, the teen told officers the shooting was accidental and that a friend had been playing with a gun when it went off, police said.

The victim was taken to South Georgia Medical Center and was listed in critical but stable condition. Police said he was later transported to a hospital in Florida for further treatment.

Detectives determined a 16-year-old male accidentally shot the victim while handling a handgun, according to police. Families of both juveniles cooperated with investigators, which police said helped determine what happened quickly.

Police said detectives contacted the Department of Juvenile Justice, which authorized the 16-year-old’s detention at a Regional Youth Detention Center. Possession of a firearm by a person under 18 and reckless conduct. Police said the teen was transported to the Lowndes County Jail for transfer to an RYDC.

“We are thankful that this accidental shooting did not result in more serious injuries,” Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan said. “We appreciate the cooperation shown by the families and the juveniles involved. Their willingness to immediately provide information and work with detectives allowed first responders and detectives to quickly determine the circumstances of the incident without any unnecessary delays, ensuring the focus remained on safety for the community, along with accountability and support for everyone who has been affected by this incident.”
