Description

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) — Nearly a dozen people have been charged weeks after a woman died in a shooting in Martinsville, Virginia.

According to the Martinsville Police Department, officers first responded to a "large disturbance" in the 500 block of Forest Street on Aug. 12.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered that Crystal Galloway Jordan, 39, of Martinsville, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds," MPD said. "She was transported to SOVAH Martinsville Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries."

In the weeks after the shooting, detectives have been working to gather evidence and conduct interviews in the case. Eventually, they discovered that a large group of people had "conspired to confront and fight a smaller group of Martinsville residents."

The group, according to the detectives, met up and traveled to Forest Street, where they started assaulting residents.

"During the altercation, firearms were brandished and discharged, ultimately resulting in Jordan’s death," MPD said.

The police department said they identified and arrested eleven people in connection with the case: nine Danville residents and two Henry County residents. MPD said all of them have been charged with malicious wounding by mob.

All the suspects are between the ages of 18 and 23 years old. Police said more criminal charges are expected as the investigation continues.

If you know anything about the incident, call Lieutenant Richard Barrow at 276-403-5458 or Crime Stoppers at 276-632-7463.
