ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Tuesday marks 80 years since the end of World War II — and some organizations are making sure younger generations don’t forget the sacrifices made for freedom.
According to the Georgia World War II Heritage Trail, more than 300,000 Georgians served in the military during the war. The trail includes 11 sites across Georgia, with a handful in the northern part of the state.
Peachtree City is home to the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Georgia Museum, where you can see and even fly in a restored World War II aircraft. Meanwhile, Camp Toccoa at Currahee and the Currahee Military Museum in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains show you where more than 17,000 paratroopers and soldiers trained.
The Atlanta International Symphony Orchestra is also partnering with the Asian Arts Alliance to hold a concert on Sept. 21 commemorating the anniversary.
The United States joined the war after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. The war ended on Sept. 2, 1945, when Japan surrendered.
