PARIS (TNND) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met on Thursday to mediate peace talks and discuss security guarantees for the country as Russia intensifies its attacks in the three-year-long war.
President Donald Trump was expected to speak with leaders over the phone after the meeting.
Over 30 countries participated in the "coalition of the willing" meeting, according to Zelenskyy.
"We discussed in detail each country’s readiness to make a contribution to ensuring security on land, at sea, in the air, and in cyberspace," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "We coordinated positions and reviewed elements of security guarantees."
We share the same view that Russia is making every effort to drag out the negotiation process and prolong the war. Support for Ukraine must be increased and pressure on Russia must be intensified," Zelenskyy continued.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who lead the group, have insisted that any European “reassurance” force in Ukraine needs the backing of the United States.
Starmer's office said after the meeting that the British prime minister “emphasized that the group had an unbreakable pledge to Ukraine, with President Trump’s backing, and it was clear they now needed to go even further to apply pressure on (Russian president Vladimir) Putin to secure a cessation of hostilities.”
Starmer's office also mentioned a decision from the coalition to supply long-range missiles to Ukraine “to further bolster the country’s supplies.”
It is unclear what members of the coalition are willing to contribute, including troops on the ground.
Putin vowed on Wednesday that he would carry on fighting in Ukraine if a peace deal cannot be reached.
"Let's see how the situation develops," Putin told reporters in Beijing, where he attended a military parade alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
He said if there is no peace deal, "then we will have to resolve all our tasks militarily."
Progress towards ending the war appears to have stalled after diplomatic efforts by Trump last month failed to result in a trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy.
