ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Hundreds of inbound and outbound flights at the Atlanta airport have already been canceled or delayed ahead of Tuesday’s winter weather.
Over 500 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were delayed Monday night. At last check at 5:30 p.m., there are 248 cancellations and 536 delays for Tuesday, according to FlightAware.
Many people impacted by the cancelations and delays are Ohio State and Notre Dame football fans who were in town for the College Football National Championship game Monday night.
“Our son is in the Ohio State marching band. So we came to see him,” Marc McMullen said. “We’re hoping that we can beat the storm.”
Other business travelers were also stuck at the Atlanta airport Tuesday.
“I was cancelled. I won’t say which airline. I won’t throw them under the bus. I’ll let them live. But it was cancelled this morning and right now still not re-routed,” traveler Daryl Garrett said.
Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city, is shuttered for the same winter weather heading our way. And with other southern cities like San Antonio and New Orleans also shuttering in the face of sub-freezing temperatures and rare snowfall, thousands of flights have been canceled.
Atlanta’s airport workers are ready regardless.
“When it gets too cold out here on the road or ramp, we have to make sure that we’re putting down the ice, because when you’re driving the equipment, you don’t want to slide or cause accidents,” said Deonte Wilson, Delta aircraft loading agent.
If you have a flight on Tuesday or Wednesday, airport officials ask that you check with your airline before heading to the airport.
Some airlines might offer a waiver when rescheduling flights.
Delta and Southwest are offering fare-difference waivers, meaning you won’t be charged the difference if you get a new flight by Jan. 25.
