VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive took place on Wednesday, July 23, and the winner has been announced.

The Valdosta Fire Department (VFD) and Valdosta Police Department (VPD) were battling it out to see who could have more blood donations made on their behalf.

It is not uncommon for the first responders putting on this event to respond to trauma calls during their workday, so they know more than ever the importance that blood donations have in their community.

“0 positive and 0 negative are always needed for these trauma calls, and a majority of those level one traumas receive blood, so this is an opportunity that we can all help,” Valdosta Fire Chief Brian Boutwell said.

Team Fire received the most donations and was named the winner this year.

Boutwell said, “We’re proud of our team for showing up and giving their full support, but we’re even more proud of the lives that will be saved because of this effort. This event isn’t just about a trophy. It’s about making sure our local hospitals have the resources they need when emergencies happen. Thank you to every donor who stepped up. Your donation truly makes a difference.”

Together, VFD and VPD received 105 donations. These donations will help to save approximately 315 lives, which is 87 more than last year’s total.
