Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A total of 291 pages of crash reports from the Albany Police Department (APD) show that in the last three years, there have been over 14,000 crashes happening on Albany Roads.

The most dangerous intersection in Albany is Dawson Road and Stuart Avenue also known as Dawson and Old Dawson Road, according to reports. WALB counted 145 crashes near that intersection in the last three years.

If you take a look at other problem areas, there have been over 1,100 crashes reported on Westover Boulevard and Oglethorpe Boulevard.

On Dawson Road, over 1,700 total crashes have happened with over 170 of those crashes happening at intersections but Slappey Boulevard has the most with 1,800 crashes reported and over 260 of those happening at major intersections along that road.

Crash data shows that in the last 3 years there have been 39 crashes at the intersection.

Albany driver Haskell Section described one of the most accident-prone intersections as North Slappey Boulevard and Palmyra Road. Crash data shows that in the last three years there have been 39 crashes at the intersection.

“Slappey is coming North and South and crosses it but it’s such a big crossing right there that lights... You can hardly see the lights,” said Section.

Crash data also shows that other problematic areas are Westover Boulevard and Nottingham Way with nearly 50 crashes reported. Over the years APD has introduced new safety devices like more cameras and stop lights.

Right now, police are working to replace traffic signals and bring 60-speed signs to the streets. The speed signs would warn drivers of their speed as they drive by.

“People think they got somewhere to get in a short time. Slow down! Then like I said you can get back to your families,” the anonymous driver said.

Overall, most Albany drivers said that it’s not the intersections that are considered dangerous but the drivers that drive through them. They say more people need to pay attention to avoid any more deadly crashes in the next few years.
