VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal traffic accident on Friday, Dec. 27.

At around 10 p.m., numerous police, firefighters, deputies, and EMS personnel responded to the 1900 block of Madison Highway for a traffic accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a 56-year-old man lying in the roadway. Police say the victim has obvious signs of trauma on his body.

Officers attempted to render aid until EMS arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they spoke with the driver who said he saw the pedestrian in the roadway and tried to swerve to avoid him, but he did not have time to do so.

“This is a tragic accident, and our thoughts go out to everyone it has affected,” said Chief Leslie Manahan.
